Denali
-
0:07 - 0:11[waves crashing against a shore]
-
0:46 - 0:49[Denali] I overheard someone talking
about their problems the other day. -
0:49 - 0:52"I had the worst day ever", they said.
-
0:52 - 0:54"First, there was nowhere to park
at Whole Foods, -
0:54 - 0:56and everyone was acting all aggro,
-
0:56 - 1:00so I had to walk like two blocks in the rain,
and my shoes got soaked. -
1:00 - 1:04Then my stupid salad was like $12.
-
1:04 - 1:05Then I was in such a rush to get to yoga,
-
1:05 - 1:07I forgot my mat
-
1:07 - 1:08and I had to use some nasty loaner mat
-
1:08 - 1:10and it smelled like balls."
-
1:12 - 1:15[Denali] I don't know what the big deal is,
I love the way balls smell. -
1:26 - 1:29I'm pretty sure Ben knows I'm dying.
-
1:30 - 1:32I'm not sure if it's the cancer
or something else, -
1:32 - 1:33but he's been taking me
-
1:33 - 1:35to all the places we used to go to,
-
1:35 - 1:37and checking on me a lot.
-
1:39 - 1:41The other day he asked me to let him know
-
1:41 - 1:43when I was ready to go.
-
1:43 - 1:46He said he didn't want me to suffer.
-
1:57 - 2:00[waves crashing]
-
2:04 - 2:07Growing up with Ben was pretty great.
-
2:07 - 2:08He made pictures for a living,
-
2:08 - 2:10and didn't feel as comfortable in the city,
-
2:10 - 2:13so we traveled around a lot.
-
2:13 - 2:14He's what his hippie friends call
-
2:14 - 2:17a "free spirit" or something.
-
2:19 - 2:21We camped a lot.
-
2:21 - 2:23I'd pretend I was a giant stinky butterfly.
-
2:23 - 2:26I'd help Ben find girlfriends.
-
2:26 - 2:28We'd go shark fishing.
-
2:28 - 2:29We'd do yoga.
-
2:29 - 2:31I'd give him kisses.
-
2:31 - 2:32We'd hang out with famous people.
-
2:32 - 2:35We even went sailing in the desert once.
-
2:36 - 2:37Which brings me to a time in my life
-
2:37 - 2:40that I've always been
a little self-conscious about. -
2:40 - 2:41Of course it's not my fault,
-
2:41 - 2:43but I became SO HANDSOME
-
2:43 - 2:45that it was impossible to ignore.
-
2:45 - 2:47When Ben started to notice,
-
2:47 - 2:49I had to start working for a living.
-
2:49 - 2:52Humiliating outfits became pretty standard.
-
2:52 - 2:54If you've ever been told to look cute,
-
2:54 - 2:57you know it's not as easy as it sounds.
-
2:57 - 3:00And you can't just fake
special kisses in the studio. -
3:00 - 3:02It won't look authentic.
-
3:03 - 3:05Oh man, those were the good old days for sure.
-
3:15 - 3:17I think most people would've
left their old dog at home, -
3:17 - 3:21but Ben insisted on taking me
to all our favourite spots one more time. -
3:23 - 3:26I think he feels like he can't
leave my side right now. -
3:29 - 3:31This one time, about ten years ago,
-
3:31 - 3:33we were camping at Joshua Tree,
-
3:33 - 3:36and Ben stood up by the campfire
and just passed out. -
3:36 - 3:39And he started bleeding.
-
3:40 - 3:42Things changed a lot after that.
-
3:42 - 3:44When I licked him, I could taste the chemicals
-
3:44 - 3:47they were putting in him to kill the cancer;
-
3:47 - 3:49but it just seemed like
they were killing him too. -
4:02 - 4:05[muffled deep waves crashing under water]
-
4:10 - 4:12If anyone had tried to take me
out of that hospital room, -
4:12 - 4:14I would've bitten their face.
-
4:16 - 4:18I remember feeling really sad for Ben
-
4:18 - 4:21when he found out he'd have to poop into
a plastic bag attached to his stomach -
4:21 - 4:24for the rest of his life.
-
4:24 - 4:27Mainly because he already had
to put all of my poop into plastic bags. -
4:28 - 4:31The worst though was when this letter
came from the insurance company. -
4:31 - 4:33["...we are rescinding your coverage
and denying the claim."] -
4:33 - 4:35One time I had the best dream ever.
-
4:35 - 4:37I dreamed I had rabies
-
4:37 - 4:38and snuck into the insurance company
-
4:38 - 4:41to share my rabies
with as many people as I could -
4:41 - 4:44before they shot me with a tranquilizer gun.
-
4:50 - 4:54I don't know what
I would have done without Ben. -
4:54 - 4:58I'm so glad his cancer went away.
-
4:58 - 4:59I'd be so scared right now
-
4:59 - 5:02if I was going through this without him.
-
5:35 - 5:39I've been trying to be really strong
for him this week. -
5:39 - 5:44Just like he was when things
were going really bad. -
5:49 - 5:52My last night was really peaceful.
-
5:52 - 5:53I wasn't hungry anymore,
-
5:53 - 5:56so I let Ben know it was time.
-
5:56 - 5:58And he let me sleep on his chest all night.
-
6:04 - 6:06Ben said a raven swooped by
-
6:06 - 6:09while he carried me
to the vet's car in the morning. -
6:09 - 6:13I'm sure his hippie friends
had lots to say about that. -
6:15 - 6:17There was this really smart scientist guy
-
6:17 - 6:21who thought that people
could learn a lot from dogs. -
6:21 - 6:22He said that when someone you love
-
6:22 - 6:23walks through the door,
-
6:23 - 6:25even if it happens five times a day,
-
6:25 - 6:28you should go totally insane with joy.
-
6:28 - 6:32[sweeping melodic electronic music
with high vocals]
