Westminster Fear & Media Bias Shafted Scotland: Russell Brand The Trews (E150)
-
0:06 - 0:08[in a sadsack scottish accent] Hulllohhhh...
-
0:08 - 0:09welcome to the troooooz...
-
0:09 - 0:13troooz uz nooz uff nooz wurr troo
thus is tha trooo... -
0:13 - 0:15[back to his english accent]
WHA' APPENED THERE THEN?? -
0:15 - 0:15[laughing]
-
0:15 - 0:17It's a bit disappointing, isn't it?
-
0:17 - 0:19because, uh, well, people go
-
0:19 - 0:20"No! pthtsniffnff..."
-
0:20 - 0:21"This proves democracy DOES work!"
-
0:21 - 0:24"Because there was an 80% turnout!"
-
0:24 - 0:25That shows you what ain't worth voting for,
-
0:25 - 0:27like, y'know, independence.
-
0:27 - 0:29People will vote.
-
0:29 - 0:31But because it seemed like
a lot of people might vote "yes", -
0:31 - 0:33the media went into overdrive
-
0:33 - 0:35to push people towards that "no" vote.
-
0:35 - 0:37The brilliant George Monbiot...
-
0:37 - 0:39i hope i said that right, you...
it's a hard word to read, -
0:39 - 0:41i read his stuff all the time,
George Monbiot, -
0:41 - 0:45he wrote this excellent article that you should
check out for yourselves in the Guardian, -
0:45 - 0:49pointing out how there was not one newspaper,
other than the Sunday Herald, -
0:49 - 0:51at a local, national or international level,
-
0:51 - 0:54that supported scottish independence.
-
0:54 - 0:55Check out this.
-
0:55 - 0:57In the Spectator, Monbiot points out
-
0:57 - 0:59that Simon Heffer (journalist) maintains that
-
0:59 - 1:02"the Scots are addicted to welfare,
-
1:02 - 1:05and embrace the something-for-nothing society"
-
1:05 - 1:06That's takin' the piss, isn't it?
-
1:06 - 1:07How do you feel now?
-
1:07 - 1:08Now you're stuck with the people,
-
1:08 - 1:10you've let them people win!
-
1:10 - 1:12Democracy exists within certain conditions.
-
1:12 - 1:16If people don't have access to proper information,
then what value does their vote have? -
1:16 - 1:17I mean, like, Westminster politics,
-
1:17 - 1:19we've seen time and time again
-
1:19 - 1:21what narrow parameters it exists within.
-
1:21 - 1:25All 3 main parties, and, y'know,
the dodgy racist geezer, -
1:25 - 1:28they all went up there
to say the same thing, didn't they? -
1:28 - 1:30I saw a brilliant tweet this morning,
cant remember who it was, -
1:30 - 1:32says that, like,
-
1:32 - 1:36when there's more options that Wanker A,
Wanker B, Wanker C, and Racist Wanker, -
1:36 - 1:38you get an 80% turnout.
-
1:38 - 1:41We don't normally get
those kind of options down here. -
1:41 - 1:45Let's have a look at a little bit
of news coverage of the event -
1:45 - 1:49as we attempt to understand this, and
attempt to understand the world we live in. -
1:49 - 1:53[reporter] ...and that means...
-
1:53 - 1:54that we are approaching the moment
-
1:54 - 1:58where we can say exactly what's happened
in this referendum. -
1:58 - 2:05And that is it, Scotland has voted no
in this referendum on independence, -
2:05 - 2:09the result in Fife has
taken the no campaign over the line, -
2:09 - 2:12*and the official result of this referendum is a no."
-
2:12 - 2:15Hugh looks like he's been cryin his eyes out,
-
2:15 - 2:17hey, where's he from, he's Welsh, isn't he?
-
2:17 - 2:23[welsh accent] "well there it is... oh... blast... we're
all doomed, there's no chance for Wales now." -
2:23 - 2:28Um, yeah i must admit, i'm sort of...
i'm sort of amazed -
2:28 - 2:32that in any election where people can go
"Do you want to fuck david cameron off or not?" -
2:32 - 2:35people went "No!" [laughing loudly]
-
2:35 - 2:36How do we get there???
-
2:36 - 2:39The only way you can get there
is through terror and dread. -
2:39 - 2:42Surely... that's why i tweeted that thing...
-
2:42 - 2:44"Fear is more powerful than faith"
-
2:44 - 2:46i didn't necessarily mean religious faith,
-
2:46 - 2:48i mean faith that we as human beings can change,
-
2:48 - 2:51faith that we as human beings
can build a different society. -
2:51 - 2:53The yes vote posed so many questions...
-
2:53 - 2:54oh god so much uncertainty,
-
2:54 - 2:56[Scots accent] "what'll happen to trident [missiles]?!"
-
2:56 - 2:57"What'll happen to this? What'll happen to..."
-
2:57 - 2:59Y'know, that people were able
to play on those fears. -
2:59 - 3:01That's why we tolerate this society,
-
3:01 - 3:04because there's so much fear of change.
-
3:04 - 3:09[Alex Salmond] "...Scotland has by majority
decided not, at this stage, -
3:09 - 3:11to become an independent country.
-
3:11 - 3:17Thank you to scotland, for 1.6 million votes
for scottish independence. -
3:17 - 3:20[loud cheers]
-
3:20 - 3:22I feel a bit like crying when i listen to that.
-
3:22 - 3:24I'm not even Scottish or anyfing.
-
3:24 - 3:25It's really affected me...
-
3:25 - 3:27because... i suppose...
-
3:27 - 3:29part of me thinks maybe democracy CAN work,
-
3:29 - 3:32maybe people WILL vote for whats best for them,
-
3:32 - 3:35but we can't because we don't have access
to the proper information, -
3:35 - 3:41and not enough people felt hopeful
that things could be different for them. -
3:41 - 3:44There's no one can convince me
that that "no" vote was like -
3:44 - 3:47"NO! Let's definitely stay in the union!! It's going fantastic!! We love it!!*
-
3:47 - 3:50We love david cameron!!
We love what's happening to the NHS!! -
3:50 - 3:54We love being on the brink of another war in the middle east to represent corporate interests!!
-
3:54 - 3:55We vote for that!!!
-
3:55 - 3:57We vote for that!!!
-
3:57 - 3:58It's fear, isn't it?
-
3:58 - 4:02Alright well let's have a look at what our leader
-and people of Scotland, YOUR leader- -
4:02 - 4:05david cameron, has to say on the subject.
-
4:05 - 4:08[david cameron] The people of Scotland
have spoken. -
4:08 - 4:10and it is a clear result.
-
4:10 - 4:14They have kept our country
of 4 nations together. -
4:14 - 4:18And like millions of other people, i am delighted.
-
4:18 - 4:20As i said during the campaign,
-
4:20 - 4:24it would have broken my heart to see
our united kingdom come to an end. -
4:24 - 4:31I hate the fact that one of the smuggest people,
ever to have lived as far as I can work out, -
4:31 - 4:34has got an opportunity to be smug.
-
4:34 - 4:35[snooty English accent] As I've said
all along, -
4:35 - 4:38whilst i was at Eton as a little boy,
wearing a top hat - -
4:38 - 4:42something a little boy should never be wearing,
unless he's Lord Snooty- -
4:42 - 4:44what i say is right.
-
4:44 - 4:46And even if it isn't right,
we'll make it right -
4:46 - 4:48by throwing money and fear at it.
-
4:48 - 4:54[cameron] So now it is time for our united kingdom
to come together and to move forward. -
4:54 - 4:59A vital part of that will be a balanced settlement,
-
4:59 - 5:06fair to people in Scotland, & importantly, to everyone
in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland as well. -
5:06 - 5:09This fellah here, he's just a rich bloke,
-
5:09 - 5:12he's a rich bloke representing other rich people.
-
5:12 - 5:16Poor people in scotland voted yes,
rich people in scotland voted no. -
5:16 - 5:19Actually not just rich people.
Rich and scared people. -
5:19 - 5:22Cause this is scary, it is scary.
-
5:22 - 5:26ISIS is scary, poverty is scary,
there's loads and loads of reasons to be scared. -
5:26 - 5:31It's hard... [big breath]
it's hard to be optimistic these days. -
5:31 - 5:33So I suppose if you're looking for optimism,
-
5:33 - 5:36one of the things we can feel optimism about
-
5:36 - 5:40is that 1.6 million people voted yes.
-
5:40 - 5:43And I think... look... on the bright side...
-
5:43 - 5:46I don't reckon it would've been a
government that was totally ... y'know... -
5:46 - 5:48it's not gonna be a utopian government,
-
5:48 - 5:50but like, the [Rupert] Murdoch press
-
5:50 - 5:54said that they didn't back
the Scottish independence campaign -
5:54 - 5:59because they feared that there'd be too much
welfare, too much interest in the environment, -
5:59 - 6:02I mean, exactly the kind of policies that we need.
-
6:02 - 6:06I'm not suggesting that Alex Salmond
is some sort of political messiah, -
6:06 - 6:12I'm just saying that those sound like better pledges
than the shit that we're gonna get stuck with. -
6:12 - 6:16[cameron] I am a passionate believer
in our united kingdom, -
6:16 - 6:20and i wanted more than anything for
our united kingdom to stay together, -
6:20 - 6:23but i am also a democrat,
-
6:23 - 6:27and it was right that we respected
the SNP's majority in Holyrood, -
6:27 - 6:31and gave the Scottish people
their right to have their say. -
6:31 - 6:34Interestingly on this day,
it's kind of micro-cosmic, -
6:34 - 6:39but there's been a campaign on the Southbank
to change the famous skateboard park there. -
6:39 - 6:40That wasn't saved democratically.
-
6:40 - 6:45That was saved by non-compliance,
disobedience, and activism. -
6:45 - 6:46That's what I'm telling you.
-
6:46 - 6:47When I'm saying "don't vote",
-
6:47 - 6:48I'm not saying [in a crotchety English accent]
Don't vote! -
6:48 - 6:51Sit indoors and have a wank
over your xbox... -
6:51 - 6:55I'm saying "don't vote", "disobey", "disobey!"
"do not comply!" -
6:55 - 6:57Scotland, USE this energy!
-
6:57 - 6:59I know in you, every one of you
that voted yes, you're now thinking -
6:59 - 7:01"Oh no! It didn't work! We got shafted!"
-
7:01 - 7:03Remember that feeling.
-
7:03 - 7:09My opinion is that this result shows you the power
of the media and the limitations of democracy. -
7:09 - 7:11As long as people live in a state of fear,
-
7:11 - 7:16it's very difficult for them to have faith
in a brighter future. -
7:16 - 7:18The media, the financial industry,
and our governments -
7:18 - 7:20keep us in a constant state of fear,
-
7:20 - 7:22so we are limited in our freedom.
-
7:22 - 7:24When it comes to the ballot box,
-
7:24 - 7:25what's the point?
-
7:25 - 7:26What power have we got?
-
7:26 - 7:32We're making uninformed decisions within
very narrowly defined and confined parameters. -
7:32 - 7:33That's why I said that thing before...
-
7:33 - 7:36it ain't worth voting, cause you don't get
to vote for things that are worth while. -
7:36 - 7:41Look at the results of activism, and disobedience,
that's where results will come from. -
7:41 - 7:43That is the troooooz!!!
-
7:43 - 7:45So-o-o-o-rry scotland...
