The State of Wikipedia

  • 0:08 - 0:11
Wikipedia is one of the most important website on the Internet today
  • 0:11 - 0:14
But you might be surprised to learn
  • 0:14 - 0:15
that it began as a side project
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    of another online encyclopedia.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    That was called Nupedia
  • 0:19 - 0:21
to be a traditional encyclopedia written by experts,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    free and online.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
But only one person had final publishing authority
  • 0:26 - 0:30
and it wasn't quit taking off.
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    As a founder of Nupedia,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
I've led the group to established a farm team of source
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    for futur Nupedia articles.
  • 0:36 - 0:40
We used a new software platform to make collaboration easy.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    The wiki.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    Wikipedia.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
It appeared to be the perfect way
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    to write mini-pages very quickly.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
Soon enough, Nupedia couldn't keep up
  • 0:50 - 0:53
and Wikipedia took a center stage.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
We are creating not just a free content encyclopedia,
  • 0:56 - 1:00
but a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    Other language edition appeared quickly,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    over 270 at last count.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
And it was soon followed by sisters projects
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    like Wikisource, Wikinews and Wiktionary.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
In 2003, I created the Wikimedia Foundation
  • 1:12 - 1:15
to ensure that Wikipedia can keep up with its own grow.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
Wikipedia get almost 400 Million visitors
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    every month.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
And the list of sites visited the more often is very short
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    and very famous.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
Wkipedia celebrates its tenth anniversary on january 2011
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    And it needs ten years
  • 1:28 - 1:31
as become one of the most popular website in the world.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
I still lead the community, and the Wikimedia Foundation
  • 1:34 - 1:37
helps us to make Wikipedia what it is today.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    Who does edit Wikipedia ?
  • 1:40 - 1:43
Over time as many as 1,2 Million people
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    have contributed to Wikipedia.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
As of 2010 there are more than 11 Million
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    According to one survey
  • 1:51 - 1:53
we have about twice the proportion of PhDs
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    compared to the general public.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
On the english Wikipedia, almost 50% have no religion.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
And 14,6 % claim to believe in Pastafarianism.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
It would be fare to say
  • 2:04 - 2:06
that most wikipedians are not average.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    One reason, maybe
  • 2:08 - 2:09
is that editing a single page is easy
Title:

Description:

The State of Wikipedia not only explores the rich history and inner-workings of the web-based encyclopedia, but it's also a celebration of its 10th anniversary. With more than 17 million articles in over 270 languages, Wikipedia has undoubtedly become one of the most visited and relied upon sites on the web today.

The fourth video in our the "State of" series, JESS3 is proud to release The State of Wikipedia as our first video of 2011. And, as if it weren't good enough, the video features none other than one of the co-founders himself, Jimmy Wales, as the narrator.
