The State of Wikipedia
-
0:08 - 0:11Wikipedia is one of the most important website on the Internet today
-
0:11 - 0:14But you might be surprised to learn
-
0:14 - 0:15that it began as a side project
-
0:15 - 0:17of another online encyclopedia.
-
0:17 - 0:19That was called Nupedia
-
0:19 - 0:21to be a traditional encyclopedia written by experts,
-
0:21 - 0:23free and online.
-
0:23 - 0:26But only one person had final publishing authority
-
0:26 - 0:30and it wasn't quit taking off.
-
0:30 - 0:31As a founder of Nupedia,
-
0:31 - 0:34I've led the group to established a farm team of source
-
0:34 - 0:36for futur Nupedia articles.
-
0:36 - 0:40We used a new software platform to make collaboration easy.
-
0:40 - 0:42The wiki.
-
0:42 - 0:45Wikipedia.
-
0:45 - 0:46It appeared to be the perfect way
-
0:46 - 0:47to write mini-pages very quickly.
-
0:47 - 0:50Soon enough, Nupedia couldn't keep up
-
0:50 - 0:53and Wikipedia took a center stage.
-
0:53 - 0:56We are creating not just a free content encyclopedia,
-
0:56 - 1:00but a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.
-
1:00 - 1:02Other language edition appeared quickly,
-
1:02 - 1:04over 270 at last count.
-
1:04 - 1:06And it was soon followed by sisters projects
-
1:06 - 1:09like Wikisource, Wikinews and Wiktionary.
-
1:09 - 1:12In 2003, I created the Wikimedia Foundation
-
1:12 - 1:15to ensure that Wikipedia can keep up with its own grow.
-
1:15 - 1:18Wikipedia get almost 400 Million visitors
-
1:18 - 1:19every month.
-
1:19 - 1:21And the list of sites visited the more often is very short
-
1:21 - 1:23and very famous.
-
1:23 - 1:26Wkipedia celebrates its tenth anniversary on january 2011
-
1:26 - 1:28And it needs ten years
-
1:28 - 1:31as become one of the most popular website in the world.
-
1:31 - 1:34I still lead the community, and the Wikimedia Foundation
-
1:34 - 1:37helps us to make Wikipedia what it is today.
-
1:37 - 1:40Who does edit Wikipedia ?
-
1:40 - 1:43Over time as many as 1,2 Million people
-
1:43 - 1:44have contributed to Wikipedia.
-
1:44 - 1:46As of 2010 there are more than 11 Million
-
1:48 - 1:51According to one survey
-
1:51 - 1:53we have about twice the proportion of PhDs
-
1:53 - 1:55compared to the general public.
-
1:55 - 1:58On the english Wikipedia, almost 50% have no religion.
-
1:58 - 2:01And 14,6 % claim to believe in Pastafarianism.
-
2:01 - 2:04It would be fare to say
-
2:04 - 2:06that most wikipedians are not average.
-
2:06 - 2:08One reason, maybe
-
2:08 - 2:09is that editing a single page is easy
- Title:
- The State of Wikipedia
- Description:
-
The State of Wikipedia not only explores the rich history and inner-workings of the web-based encyclopedia, but it's also a celebration of its 10th anniversary. With more than 17 million articles in over 270 languages, Wikipedia has undoubtedly become one of the most visited and relied upon sites on the web today.
The fourth video in our the "State of" series, JESS3 is proud to release The State of Wikipedia as our first video of 2011. And, as if it weren't good enough, the video features none other than one of the co-founders himself, Jimmy Wales, as the narrator.
