Amandla Stenberg: Don't Cash Crop On My Cornrows
-
0:05 - 0:08So black hair has always been
an essential component of black culture. -
0:08 - 0:11Black hair requires upkeep in order
for it to grow and remain healthy, -
0:11 - 0:13so black women
have always done their hair. -
0:13 - 0:17It's just a part of our identity:
braids, locs, twists and cornrows, etc. -
0:17 - 0:19Cornrows are a really functional way
-
0:19 - 0:24of keeping black textured hair unknotted
and neat, but like with style. -
0:24 - 0:28So you can see why hair is such a big part
of hip hop and rap culture. -
0:28 - 0:31These are styles of music which
African American communities created -
0:31 - 0:34in order to affirm our identities
and our voices. -
0:34 - 0:37In the early 2000's you saw
many R&B stars wearing cornrows: -
0:37 - 0:41Alicia Keys, Beyonce, R. Kelly
and many more. -
0:41 - 0:45As hip hop became more and more popular
and integrated into pop culture, -
0:45 - 0:46so did Black culture.
-
0:46 - 0:50Eminem's album went four times platinum and he
achieved immense success in the hip hop world. -
0:50 - 0:53Black culture had become popular.
-
0:53 - 0:56As the early 2000's turned into 2010's,
white people began to wear -
0:56 - 0:59clothing and accessories associated with hip hop,
-
0:59 - 1:03more and more celebrities could be seen
wearing cornrows and braids and even grills. -
1:03 - 1:07So by 2013, the fashion world
had adopted cornrows as well. -
1:07 - 1:10Cornrows and braids were seen
on high fashion runways, -
1:10 - 1:12for brands like Marchesa
and Alexander McQueen, -
1:12 - 1:17and magazines had editorial campaigns
featuring cornrows as a new urban hairstyle. -
1:17 - 1:21Riff Raff came on to the scene,
a suburban white middle class man -
1:21 - 1:26who almost ironically took on a Black-set
and wore braids and gold teeth. -
1:26 - 1:29And then James Franco took inspiration from
Riff Raff for his role as an alien in Spring Breakers. -
1:29 - 1:34Pop stars and icons adopted Black culture
as a way of being edgy and gaining attention. -
1:34 - 1:39In 2013, Miley Cyrus twerks
and uses Black women as props, -
1:39 - 1:42and in 2014, in one of her videos called
This is How We Do, -
1:42 - 1:47Katy Perry uses ebonics and hand gestures,
eats watermelons while wearing cornrows -
1:47 - 1:51before cutting inexplicably
to a picture of Aretha Franklin. -
1:55 - 2:02Soooo... as you can see
cultural appropriation was rampant. -
2:03 - 2:08Not only were white people becoming rappers
but they were excelling in the world of hip hop. -
2:08 - 2:10Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' song Thrift Shop
-
2:10 - 2:13garnered a number one spot
on Billboard's year end chart for 2013, -
2:13 - 2:16and then Iggy Azalea's song Fancy
reached number one the following year. -
2:16 - 2:20And in May 2014, Forbes released an article titled
-
2:20 - 2:25"Hip Hop's unlikely new star,
a white blonde Australian woman." -
2:26 - 2:31But at the same time, police brutality
against Black people came to the forefront. -
2:31 - 2:33In an incredible movement
ignited by the murders of -
2:33 - 2:37Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice,
Eric Graner and many others, -
2:37 - 2:42people began to protest institutionalized racism
by marching and by using social media. -
2:42 - 2:48Celebrities spread awareness and
shared condolences, or at least some did, -
2:48 - 2:52as Azealia Banks, a Black female rapper,
pointed out. -
2:52 - 2:54As Azealia Banks observed in her tweets,
-
2:54 - 2:58white musicians who partook in hip hop culture
and adopted Blackness -
2:58 - 3:00-Iggy Azalea in particular-
-
3:00 - 3:04failed to speak on the racism
that comes along with Black identity. -
3:04 - 3:08Banks & Azalia feuded on Twitter until Banks
participated interview on New Yorks Hot 97. -
3:08 - 3:10[Azealia Amanda Banks] I have a problem
-
3:10 - 3:13when youre trying to like say that it's hip hop,
-
3:13 - 3:16and youre trying to like put it
like up against black culture. -
3:16 - 3:19It's like cultural smudging, is what I see.
-
3:19 - 3:20All it says to white kids is like,
-
3:20 - 3:23'Oh yeah, you're great, you're amazing,
you can do whatever you put your mind to.' -
3:23 - 3:25And it says to black kids,
-
3:25 - 3:28'You don't have shit, you don't own shit,
not even shit you've created for yourself.' -
3:28 - 3:30And it makes me upset."
-
3:30 - 3:33[Amandla Stenberg] That itself is what is so
complicated when it comes to Black culture. -
3:33 - 3:36I mean the line between cultural
appropriation and cultural exchange -
3:36 - 3:38is always going to be blurred,
but here is the thing: -
3:38 - 3:43Appropriation occurs when a style leads
to racist generalizations or stereotypes -
3:43 - 3:44where it originated
-
3:44 - 3:50but is deemed as high fashion, cool or funny
when the privileged take it for themselves. -
3:50 - 3:52Appropriation occurs when the appropriator
-
3:52 - 3:55is not aware of the deep significance
of the culture they are partaking in. -
3:55 - 3:58Hip hop stems from a black struggle,
it stems from jazz and blues, -
3:58 - 4:03styles of music which African-Americans created
to retain humanity in the face of adversity, -
4:03 - 4:08which itself stems from songs song used
during slavery to communicate and survive. -
4:08 - 4:13On a smaller scale but in a similar vein,
braids and cornrows are not merely stylistic. -
4:13 - 4:16Theyre necessary in order
to keep black hair neat. -
4:16 - 4:22So Ive been seeing this question a lot on
social media and I think it's really relevant: -
4:22 - 4:22what would America be like
-
4:22 - 4:25if we loved black people
as much as we love black culture?
